Expert Walkthrough
The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express is a great card for people who want an easy to understand rewards card from one of the best credit card issuers in the United States.
This Blue Cash Everyday card review will discuss the rewards structure and who can make the best use of this credit card.
What Types of Rewards Are Offered?
The Amex BCE card offers only one type of reward: cash back. Every purchase you make will contribute a percentage of your purchase to your cash back balance.
Despite the “cash” in the card’s name, you’re not limited to taking your cash back balance as cash, though you’re more than welcome to if that’s what you’d like. American Express has a rewards store where you can redeem your cash back for rewards such as gift cards, electronics, and more.
Cash back that you earn is added to your balance at the end of each statement period, making it easy to track your earnings. Your statement will even include a breakdown of your spending and how much you spent in each earning category. You can redeem your cash back in $25 increments.
Earning Categories
The American Express BCE card has three rewards tiers. You’ll earn 1% back on every purchase you make. That means you get $1 back for every $100 you spend at any merchant, anywhere in the world.
You’ll earn a 1% bonus on purchases made at gas stations or select department stores, such as Sears, J.C. Penney, Kohl’s, or Macy’s. That means that you get $2 back for every $100 you spend at those locations.
The top earning category on the Blue Cash Everyday card is grocery stores. You’ll earn 3% cash back on every purchase you make at grocery stores, up to $6,000 of spending per year. After that, you’ll earn the standard 1% back.
If you manage to reach the limit, you’ll have earned $180, making it easy to see why the Blue Cash Everyday card is such a popular credit card.
Sign-Up Bonus
The Blue Cash Everyday offers a sign-up bonus to new cardholders. THe bonus changes regularly and some consumers are specifically targeted with advertisements for the card that contain a code that gets them an even better bonus.
The bonus usually takes the form of a large cash rebate, such as $100, for reaching a specific amount of spending within the first few months of having the card. This can greatly accelerate your rewards earnings in your first few months with the card.
Other Features
While the cash back you can earn on gas and groceries is nice, what truly makes this card Amex’s everyday card is the extra bonuses it offers.
American Express Offers
With your Blue Cash Everyday card, you’ll get access to American Express Offers, a deal service run by American Express.
When you log into your online account you’ll see a list of offers that you can add to your card. These offers come from a huge variety of merchants, both large and small, such as Amazon, Airbnb, Rover, Oakley, and MGM Resorts. Some offers are simple percentage discounts on your purchase. Others take the format of “spend $x and get $y back” deals. For example, one offer that was available at the time of writing was “spend $150 at Airbnb and get $50 back.”
Unlike cash back, these offers give you a statement credit automatically. You see the savings right away instead of having to redeem your cash back balance. The downside is that if you want to redeem your balance for something other than cash back, you can’t use these offers to accelerate your progress to your goal.
Travel Insurance
Another benefit that you’ll get is free travel insurance. If you use your card to book your flights or rental car you’ll automatically be covered. American Express will cover damage or theft or rented vehicles, accidental death or dismemberment while on a plane, and offers a 24/7 global assist hotline that can help you get medical, legal, or financial help whenever you’re more than 100 miles from home.
Extended Warranty
Whenever you purchase a piece of expensive equipment using your credit card the product’s warranty will automatically be extended by one year, so long as the original warranty lasts five years or less.
Once the specialist assigned to the purchase on your American Express blue cash everyday reviews your claim, you can be reimbursed for up to $10,000 per item and $50,000 per calendar year. You’ll never have to worry about something you buy breaking right after the warranty expires ever again.
Why Not Get the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express?
The American Express Blue Cash Preferred card offers all the benefits of the Everyday card, but soups up the cash back, letting you earn 3% on gas and department stores and 6% on groceries. These benefits come at a price, as the preferred card charges a $95 annual fee. If you spend enough that the extra cash back will cover the annual fee, then it’s worth upgrading, otherwise, stick with the Everyday card.
